It's late. Ship's evening, long after dinner.
River's barefoot, and walking carefully -- she's holding something in both hands, concentrating intently on keeping it level. This, as often, means that her footsteps are silent on the metal grating of Serenity's hallway.
The soft noise of an aluminum tray being set down, though, isn't silent.
Neither is the knock on Mal's door. Three knocks then two, like a code, and loud enough to be heard easily.
Then she's slipping away, down the corridor and around the bend towards the common room.
