[After this.]
River's looking thoughtful. Intently so.
Mal's not on the bridge. Not in the kitchen, either. She keeps looking.

Date: 2006-09-08 11:08 pm (UTC)"What are you up and about doin', little one?"
no subject
Date: 2006-09-08 11:09 pm (UTC)"Found you. We'll call it the grail."

Date: 2006-09-08 11:12 pm (UTC)"Any reason in particular you were lookin' for me, or am I really as entertaining as I think I am?"
no subject
Date: 2006-09-08 11:19 pm (UTC)Beat.
...Long beat.
River visibly remembers that she hasn't actually said the useful part aloud, and carries on. "I want to have some friends over." This is said with the seriousness of a child asking permission for a sleepover.

Date: 2006-09-08 11:21 pm (UTC)Oh.
"Do I like these friends?"
Mal pulls off the prudent questions, sometimes.

Date: 2006-09-08 11:26 pm (UTC)River lets Mal answer his own question. Although there's a certain unspoken implication that if he doesn't like them, there will be disapproval.

Date: 2006-09-08 11:55 pm (UTC)"Oh. Well then, that's fine. So long as they're not bringin' like, a herd o' cattle on with them. We frown upon that here."

Date: 2006-09-08 11:59 pm (UTC)Beat.
"Planetside?" That's hopeful.
no subject
Date: 2006-09-09 12:03 am (UTC)"Didn't reckon on them being too interested in planetside, except at Ma's. Anyplace in particular?"
no subject
Date: 2006-09-11 03:01 am (UTC)It's quieter, and serious, and directed at the cargo bay's high ceiling.
"Let the world keep going. All the way out."

Date: 2006-09-11 06:43 pm (UTC)Not that Mal begrudges Kitty by any means whatsoever -- he's just starting to get the notion that he runs a boarding house, not a spaceship.

Date: 2006-09-11 07:15 pm (UTC)Low, "Promise."

Date: 2006-09-11 08:20 pm (UTC)"Sure everything's alright?"
no subject
Date: 2006-09-11 08:36 pm (UTC)"It's a vacation." Said as if that's an answer to his question. Maybe, to River, it is.

Date: 2006-09-11 09:14 pm (UTC)In an attempt to change the subject, "Dora said I could go visit her house in..." Beat. "France, if I wanted to."

Date: 2006-09-11 09:49 pm (UTC)To Mal and the stairway railing both, from the look of it, but mostly to Mal.

Date: 2006-09-11 09:56 pm (UTC)"Not that I'd ever stay away for more 'n a couple of days."
no subject
Date: 2006-09-11 10:08 pm (UTC)"It's a trade."
no subject
Date: 2006-09-12 02:29 am (UTC)Or having Mal be distracted away from things?
"I'd like to think so," he replies, but he's not sure to what.

Date: 2006-09-12 03:25 am (UTC)River's watching something on the floor of the cargo bay. Something at least mildly interesting, apparently, although all that's there is the grating floor and the usual assortment of crates.

Date: 2006-09-12 03:31 am (UTC)"Traditions is nice, sometimes."
no subject
Date: 2006-09-12 03:42 am (UTC)It's a while later -- after a discussion of traditions, France, and architecture in which River spends a lot of time staring at the floor and Mal spends a lot of time looking as if he's not entirely sure what they're talking about -- that she rises and drifts away again.
But she's looking a little more relaxed, now.
Not entirely, but a little.
